Blacksmith for the evening while updating all projects

Writer's picture: Barnaby WildeBarnaby Wilde

There is nothing like getting back to a craft that is hundreds of years old. The cast iron and steel spiral staircase I bought needed extending to fit the high 3 metre ground floor to first floor distance. I have cut the steel handrail to fit the top and bottom of stairs leaving a four step gap around the steel beams with I intend to bolt the stair rail to for extra rigidity.

1 metre of mild steel bar later and the wood burner glowing beautifully with embers and I heated the bar ends until the metal glowed white and I was able to curve the steel using a lump hammer and anvil to the required 35 degree angle

Ans the results against the 1898 Vestry wall panel and the Victorian doors to the gym and home office are.......

Pleased with the top of staircase with a custom built landing from salvaged ebay purchases and utilising restored timber

A new project is the Victorian bathroom being relocated in the centre of the house so the old bathroom can be converted to another bedroom in the west wing of the house

Bathroom created by building a stud wall and designing the frame to fit the remainder of the Ormskirk Methodist Church stained glass windows to allow light from the corridor window to pass through high level . Special Rockwall fire , sound and heat resistant insulation added between the plaster boards .

The old French wardrobe is designed to fit in the corridor with a built in towel cupboard planned ...

Full PPE for the insulation fitting

The secret staircase is starting to be hidden by the reclaimed scaffold board new landing and corridor to bedroom 4 ( current 1960's bathroom) . New loft hatch seen in photo replacing tiny inspection hatch above spiral staircase that I got my shoulders stuck in . Loft is a good size and needs insulating and boarding for storage area

New home office is being plastered , floors sanded , and new elecrical ring main added for electric radiators and 5 new double sockets

Next jobs skimmimg plaster, fitting plaster coving, attaching sockets and radiators with reclaimed skirting board from removed library wall . Planned window location to look down the walled Victorian garden seen highlighted by primer paint surround .

New bay windows to be fitted in Feb with 1970's shop window removed and bay window brick work rebuilt from reclaimed Victorian bricks with engineering bricks and airbricks added to ventilate the cellar ( Movie room )
